Yes. Indian passport holders are not eligible for the US Visa Waiver Program and must obtain a visa before travelling to the United States. For tourism and business, that is the B2 and B1 visa respectively — commonly issued together as a B1/B2. There are no exceptions; even a short layover that involves clearing US immigration requires a valid visa.
B1 is for business travel — attending meetings, conferences, negotiations, or short-term training. B2 is for tourism, leisure, and visiting family. In practice, the US consulate almost always issues both on a single B1/B2 visa, giving you the flexibility to travel for either purpose without applying separately.
There is no formal checklist, but consular officers assess four key areas: (1) Strong ties to India — property, employment, family, business — that give you a genuine reason to return; (2) Financial capacity to fund your trip without needing to work in the US; (3) A clear, credible purpose of travel; and (4) No prior immigration violations. The US B1/B2 visa is a foil sticker pasted in your passport. It displays your name, passport number, visa category (B1/B2), issue date, expiry date, and the number of permitted entries. The expiry date on the sticker is not how long you can stay — it is the last date you can use the visa to enter. How long you actually stay is determined by the officer at the port of entry, stamped on your I-94 record.
