But a B1/B2 application is not judged by weight, and half of what people carry to the consulate creates more questions than it answers.

The Four Documents You Cannot Walk In Without

Begin with the non-negotiables, the four things you genuinely cannot walk in without. Your passport, valid for at least six months beyond your intended stay and with your old passports if you have them. Your DS-160 confirmation page with the barcode, printed, not on your phone. Your appointment confirmation letter for both the OFC biometrics slot and the consular interview. And your MRV fee receipt. Without these four you will not get past the gate, forget the officer.

Why the US Visa Photo Causes More Reschedules Than Anything Else

Your photograph deserves its own paragraph because it causes more reschedules than anything else. The US requires a 2x2 inch photo, white background, taken within the last six months, face occupying roughly half the frame, no spectacles at all, ears visible, neutral expression, no uniform. The DS-160 upload frequently fails for Indian applicants because the local studio hands over a 35x45mm photo, which is the Schengen size, not the US size. Ask your HR for a letter on company letterhead that states your designation, your date of joining, your annual CTC, the dates of your sanctioned leave and one line confirming that you are expected back at work on a specific date. That last line is the one that does the heavy lifting, so do not let HR skip it. If you run your own business, carry your GST registration certificate, your company's ITR, a Certificate of Incorporation or Shop and Establishment licence, and a CA-certified computation of income.

The Papers That Answer 'Will You Come Back?' Without You Saying a Word

Ties to India are what the officer is actually testing, so carry what proves you have a life here that is inconvenient to abandon. Property documents such as the sale deed or the latest property tax receipt. Your children's school fee receipts or bonafide certificates. Proof of dependent parents living with you. A running home loan statement is surprisingly useful, because a person with a twenty-two lakh outstanding loan on a Thane flat is not a likely overstay candidate. These are the papers that answer the unspoken question without you having to say a word.

If Someone in the US Is Sponsoring Your Trip

If somebody in the US is inviting you, the invitation set is simple and people still get it wrong. You need an invitation letter from your host mentioning their status in the US, their address, your relationship and the dates of your visit. You need a copy of their passport biodata page or green card, along with their visa status page such as the I-797 if they are on H1B. If they are sponsoring you financially, add their last two years of tax returns and the I-134 affidavit of support if they have prepared one. Do not send this to the consulate in advance. Carry it.

What to Leave at Home, and Why a Paid Ticket Works Against You

Here is what to leave at home, and this is the part people resist. Do not carry confirmed, fully paid flight tickets. A flexible booking or a hold is fine, an already-paid ticket only tells the officer you assumed approval and, if you are refused, you have lost the money. Do not carry a paid non-refundable hotel package either, a booking.com reservation with free cancellation covers you. Do not carry sealed original property documents you cannot replace, photocopies with one original in the bag are enough. And please do not carry recommendation letters from politicians or officials, they carry zero weight and they look like an attempt at influence.

The Pre-Interview Deposit That Gets Applications Flagged

A specific mistake worth flagging. Do not go to the bank a week before your interview and deposit eight lakh into an account that usually holds forty thousand. Officers see this pattern every single day, and a large unexplained deposit right before an interview reads as a borrowed balance. If money genuinely came in, such as a sold asset, a maturity payout or a bonus, carry the proof of source. Season your account for at least three months if you can, meaning the money should have been sitting there and behaving normally.

How to Stack the File So the Officer Can Move Fast

Organise the file in the order the officer would ask for it, not in chronological order. Passport set on top, then financials, then employment, then ties, then invitation. Use tabbed dividers if you like, but skip the plastic sleeves, because the officer cannot flip through those quickly and fumbling wastes the few seconds you have. Keep the whole thing in a clear folder so security at the consulate can check it fast.

The other thing consulates in India are strict about is what you carry on your body. No bags, no laptops, no mobile phones at most US consulates in India, and no electronics of any kind. There are paid storage kiosks nearby but they fill up and they add forty minutes to your morning. Come with your documents, your passport, your appointment letter, a pen, and nothing else. Leave the car keys with whoever dropped you.

What the Document File Is Really For

One final word on what the document file is really for. In roughly seven out of ten B1/B2 interviews in India, the officer asks for nothing beyond your passport and fingerprints. The file is insurance, not the argument. Your argument is a clean DS-160, a clear purpose, a specific set of dates and an obvious reason to come home. The documents are simply there to back up whatever you said if the officer decides to check.
