UK visitor visa from India: the exact documents, bank balance and cover letter that get approved

The UK Standard Visitor visa is decided very differently from a US visa, and Indians who have done one assume the other works the same way. It does not. There is no interview in the vast majority of cases. An Entry Clearance Officer sitting in a processing hub reads your documents and your online form and makes a decision, and you never get to explain anything. Which means everything you would have said at a counter has to be written down, and written down well.
The Genuine Visitor Test in Appendix V, in Plain Language
The rules live in Appendix V of the Immigration Rules, and the heart of it is the genuine visitor requirement. In plain language, the officer must be satisfied that you will leave the UK at the end of your visit, that you will not live in the UK through frequent or successive visits, that you can fund your trip and your stay without working or accessing public funds, and that you genuinely intend to do what you have said you will do. Every document you submit should serve one of those four points.
Applying Online, Priority Processing and Realistic Timelines
Start with the application itself. You apply online through the UK government portal, pay the fee for a six-month visitor visa, book a biometrics appointment at a VFS Global centre in your city, and upload your documents. You can also pay for priority or super priority processing where available, which meaningfully shortens the wait. Standard processing is commonly around three weeks from biometrics, but it stretches in peak season, so apply at least six to eight weeks before you travel.
The Financial Block: Stamped Statements, Form 16 and Three Years of ITR
Your financial documents are the largest single block. Submit six months of bank statements, stamped by the bank, showing your name and account number on every page. Add your last six months of salary slips, your Form 16, and your last three years of ITR acknowledgements. If you are self-employed, add your GST returns, company registration, CA-certified income statement and business bank statements. What the officer is checking is the same trio as always, which is affordability, ownership and consistency with your declared income.
How Much Money Is 'Enough' for a UK Visitor Visa?
On the balance question, the UK publishes no minimum for visitors, and that is not the same as no expectation. The officer estimates whether your funds cover the trip you described plus a margin. For a ten-day UK trip, flights, hotels, transport and food realistically run between one lakh eighty and three lakh per person depending on your style, and your statements should absorb that without emptying the account. A sudden large credit shortly before applying will be noticed and should be explained with its source document.
Ties to India Have to Be Shown, Not Asserted
Ties to India need to be shown, not asserted. Your employment letter should state your designation, joining date, salary, sanctioned leave dates and your confirmed return-to-work date. Add property documents, your children's school records, evidence of dependants, and any ongoing loan or financial commitment in India. If you have a business, evidence that it runs and employs people is strong. The officer is not looking for wealth, they are looking for obligations.
The Itinerary, the Host Letter and What a Sponsor Must Submit
Your itinerary should be plausible and complete. Include your flight reservation, which does not need to be paid, your hotel bookings with free cancellation, and a day-by-day plan of where you will be. If you are visiting family, include the host's invitation letter with their address, their immigration status in the UK such as their BRP or passport copy, and a line confirming whether they are providing accommodation or funding. If your host is sponsoring you, their bank statements and payslips come in too.
The One Page Cover Letter That Does the Talking for You
Now the cover letter, which Indians either skip entirely or write far too emotionally. Keep it to one page. Open with who you are, your job and your city. State the exact dates of travel, the purpose, the places you will visit and where you will stay. State clearly who is paying and how much you have set aside. Then state your reasons for returning, naming your job, your family responsibilities and your commitments. Close with a list of what you have enclosed. No pleading, no gratitude paragraph, no promises about how much you love British history.
The Contradictions That Cause Most Refusals From India
Here is the thing that most often causes refusals from India, and it is written into almost every refusal notice we read. The officer is not satisfied on the balance of probabilities about your circumstances, usually because the documents do not add up rather than because they are missing. Income declared as eighty thousand a month, bank credits that do not match, an ITR that shows far less, a hotel booking for six nights against a fourteen-day itinerary. Sit with your own file for an hour before submitting and read it as a stranger who is looking for contradictions.
Undeclared Refusals and the Ten Year Deception Ban
The second big cause is undeclared or inconsistent history. Previous visa refusals for any country, including the US or Schengen, must be declared, with dates and reasons. A previous UK refusal that you omit is treated as deception, and deception can trigger a ban of up to ten years. Also declare previous UK visits accurately, including exact dates, because the Home Office has its own records and a mismatch damages you more than the underlying fact.
Families, Children and Homemaker Spouses
For families travelling together, submit each applicant's own full application but cross-reference them. A child needs a birth certificate, consent from the non-travelling parent if applicable, and school documents. A homemaker spouse should submit the earning spouse's financial documents along with the marriage certificate and a sponsorship line in the cover letter. Do not leave any applicant looking financially unexplained.
Do Not Apply for Six Months If You Are Going for Eleven Days
An insider tip about visit length. Do not apply for the maximum stay if you plan a short trip. Saying you will visit for eleven days with specific dates, hotels and a return flight is stronger than a vague six-month intention, even though the visa itself is normally issued for six months. And if you have travelled to the UK before, mention the previous visit and your compliant return prominently, because a demonstrated record of leaving on time is the most persuasive thing in your entire file.
Last practical note. Visitor visa refusals carry no general right of appeal. Your realistic route is to reapply with a corrected, strengthened application, addressing each point raised in the refusal notice specifically. So treat the first application as the one that counts, spend the extra two evenings on the documents, and submit something that answers the officer's questions before they are asked.
